Did you know that Latvia:
- had two colonies in the 17th century: St Andrew’s Island (western Gambia) and Tobago (Caribbean);
- Jacob W. Davis produced the world’s first jeans, which he later patented with Levi Strauss. Jacob was born in Riga, came from a family of Latvian Jews, and emigrated to the USA in 1854;
- On 27 September 1605, the Battle of Kircholm took place – this is Latvian territory, today’s town of Salasplis. The battle was part of the Polish-Swedish War of Inflants. Today, a stone with an inscription has been erected in Salasplis to commemorate this event;
- The national alcohol is the so-called black balsam – a herbal liqueur. Its oldest known recipe dates back to 1752. The drink has 45% alcohol and its taste is reminiscent of a combination of cough syrup and Jagermeister;
- Latvia is home to the widest waterfall in Europe. It is not high – only 2.2 m, but its width is awe-inspiring.
